Gurian,

Institute
 Michael
Gurian is a social
philosopher, family therapist, corporate consultant, and the New York
Times bestselling author of twenty one books published in twenty
languages. The Gurian Institute, which he co-founded, conducts research
internationally, launches pilot programs and trains professionals.
Michael has been called "the people's philosopher" for his ability to
bring together people's ordinary lives and scientific ideas.
As a social philosopher, he
has pioneered efforts to bring neuro-biology and brain research into
homes, workplaces, schools and public policy. A number of his
ground-breaking books in child development, including THE
WONDER OF BOYS, BOYS
AND GIRLS LEARN DIFFERENTLY! THE
WONDER OF GIRLS and THE
MINDS OF BOYS, have sparked national debate. His newest work NURTURE THAT NATURE
(May, 2007) provides a revolutionary new framework, based in
neuro-biology, by which to understand and care for the needs of
children from birth all the way into the twenties.
Michael has served as a
consultant to families, corporations, therapists, physicians, school
districts, community agencies, churches, criminal justice personnel and
other professionals, traveling to approximately 30 cities per year to
keynote at conferences. His training videos (also available as DVDs)
for parents and volunteers are used by Big Brother and Big Sister
agencies in the U.S. and Canada.
As an educator, Michael
previously taught at Gonzaga University, Eastern Washington University,
and Ankara University. His speaking engagements include Harvard
University, Johns Hopkins University, Stanford University, Macalester
College, University of Colorado, University of Missouri-Kansas City,
and UCLA. His philosophy reflects the diverse cultures (European,
Asian, Middle Eastern and American) in which he has lived, worked and
studied.

Kathy Stevens
Training Director, The Gurian Institute
 Kathy Stevens, MPA, owner of Rocky Mountain Learning Enterprises, LLC,
is a professional trainer/international presenter and co-author of the
newly released The
Minds of Boys: Saving Our Sons From Falling Behind in School and Life
(Jossey-Bass, 2005). Her work has been featured in national
publications including Newsweek, Reader’s Digest, Educational
Leadership, Education Week and Library Journal.
As
Director of the Training Division of the Gurian Institute, Kathy works
with
educators, parents and other youth serving
professionals, helping
them understand nature-based theory and adapt curriculum to help both
boys and girls maximize their potential in the classroom and in life.
Kathy has over 25 years of experience working in the nonprofit sector,
focusing on children, youth, families and women’s issues. Her
professional experience includes designing and administering programs
in early childhood care and education, domestic violence, juvenile
corrections, adult community corrections, teen pregnancy prevention,
cultural competency and women’s issues. Much of her early work was done
in economically disadvantaged minority communities.
In addition to her work with the Gurian
Institute, Kathy has designed
and delivered training for the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Virginia
Department of Corrections, Girl Scouts, US Navy Ombudsman Program,
Disproportionate Minority Confinement Task Force and a variety of
nonprofit organizations. As a diversity trainer, she was honored to
participate in the Children’s Defense Fund’s Institute for Cultural
Competency at the former Alex Haley Farm in Tennessee.
Kathy holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Old Dominion
University in Norfolk, Virginia and a Masters In Public Administration
from the University of Colorado.
Kathy lives in Colorado Springs with her husband, Don and has two sons
and two grandchildren. In their spare time, Kathy and Don enjoy
traveling the back roads of Colorado (and the country) looking for
birds!
